As a photographer, getting to capture life in its most authentic forms is what I love most! Visiting a working ranch has been on my mind, and this spring, I finally made it to Prairie Edge Livestock Ranch. It was everything I hoped for and more – truly a magical experience to photograph.

Witnessing Life Unfold

Stepping onto the ranch, I realized I wasn’t dressed for the occasion and my shoes were about to get messy! The main sounds were the bleating of ewes and the “baas” of new lambs coming from a barn. For a me, it was an immediate dive into real, unscripted moments.

I arrived right in the middle of lambing season. It’s hard to describe the feeling of seeing a tiny miracle unfold before your eyes. One minute, the team is working to help a mama sheep, and the next, a little wet, wobbly lamb is taking its first breaths. It was natural, beautiful, and completely captivating. I realized, every time I clicked the shutter, I was preserving a little bit of ranch history.

Capturing the Details

My camera focused on these little ones. I looked for the small details: a mother’s gentle lick, those tentative first steps, and the pure overwhelm of life on the outside. Each photo tells a story of new life and new bonds between them.

Through my lens, I saw the dedication of the ranchers caring for their flock, and then watched these precious new lives appear. It really made me appreciate the hard work involved in raising livestock.

More Than Just Photos

Heading to Prairie Edge Livestock Ranch, I expected to get some great photos, and I definitely did! But I also left with a deep sense of connection to the moment. It was a heartwarming and eye-opening experience that reminded me of the incredible things waiting to be discovered and photographed when we’re truly present…and smack in the middle of chaos!
